A Michigan claims court judge has cleared the way for a January trial on Michigan’s liability for the collapse of a privately owned dam that unleashed widespread flooding, denying the state’s bid to end the litigation.

Defense attorney Ven Johnson said the 2020 dam collapse lawsuit scored a victory last week when a Michigan Court of Claims judge approved an expert dam witness for the plaintiffs.

A Michigan state judge overseeing litigation against regulatory agencies over a dam that collapsed and caused widespread flooding said he will not bar an expert from testifying that the government ignored risks and took actions that increased the danger of the a dam failure.

Ten families and one alleged victim of former Huron Valley schools long-term substitute teacher Timothy Daugherty filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Detroit on Monday.

Families of 11 children who reported that they were sexually assaulted by an Oakland County substitute teacher are suing the instructor, the district where he worked and the agency who employed him, alleging officials knew of past questionable behavior but didn’t act.

Nearly a dozen families are suing the Huron Valley School District, a staffing company, and multiple school employees after a substitute teacher was convicted in the spring of sexually assaulting elementary school students.

On this Crime Unveiled with Courtney Bennett, Michigan Attorney Ven Johnson was arguing a case in Atlanta Georgia on behalf of a man who was awarded $100 million dollars in a case where a jury found excessive force was used by a police officer.

Michigan State University reached a $2.45 million settlement in July with another survivor of the Feb. 13, 2023 campus shooting, according to documents obtained by The State News. 

An Eleventh Circuit panel appeared conflicted Thursday over whether to toss a $40 million verdict against the city of Atlanta and a cop who left a man a quadriplegic after shocking him with a Taser over suspicions of panhandling.
