PAUL F. DOHERTY

Paul F. Doherty is the managing partner of Ven Johnson Law’s Detroit office. In addition to managing and collaborating with the firm's senior trial attorneys and associate attorneys, he is often called upon to represent individuals and families at trial in state and federal courts. He focuses on high-stakes matters where liability is contested, and outcomes depend on strong trial strategy and execution. Most recently, he and his team secured an $8.6 million verdict in a medical malpractice case where the offer heading into trial was zero. He also has a prominent role in many of the settlements secured by the firm, totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

With decades of experience, Paul has handled complex cases involving significant exposure and has played a leadership role in large-scale litigation. He has been appointed by the Wayne County Circuit Court as Plaintiff's Liaison Counsel on behalf of the State of Michigan in federal multidistrict litigation involving a defective medical product and has also served on Plaintiff's Steering Committees in cases consolidated in Wayne County Circuit Court. He currently is co-lead counsel in a case involving thousands of individuals and businesses that sustained catastrophic damages estimated to exceed $100 million when storm pumps in the Metro Detroit area failed to activate, causing widespread flooding and property damage.

Paul earned his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he was an editor of the Law Review.  He has published numerous articles, including a chapter in ICLE Michigan Civil Procedure.

Outside of the office, Paul is a member of the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers and past president of the Catholic Lawyers Society. He is a long-time member of the Detroit Athletic Club, where he plays squash and has held numerous leadership and athletic committee positions.

He and his wife are the proud parents of four adult daughters.
